Raag Shuddha Sarang
The evening features the exceptional talents of Prashant Shashikumar on the sitar and Rishi Rajeev on the tabla. Prashant's mastery of the sitar and Rishi's rhythmic finesse on the tabla come together in a captivating performance of Raag Shuddha Sarang.
Raag Shuddha Sarang, a midday raga, is often associated with the gentle onset of the monsoon season. It evokes the peaceful feeling of the first drops of rain after a long, hot day, bringing cool, fresh air and the wonderful, earthy smell of rain-soaked soil. This raga captures that serene and refreshing mood.
The structure of Raag Shuddha Sarang is unique, using specific notes that create a feeling of tranquility and beauty. The ascent (aroha) and descent (avaroha) of the notes are smooth, and the emphasis on particular notes like Re (second) and Dha (sixth) adds to its calming effect. It typically starts with slow, meditative melodies that gradually build up to faster, more intricate patterns.
Prashant's sitar melodies flow like a gentle stream, creating a soothing atmosphere, while Rishi's tabla rhythms are steady and comforting, perfectly complementing the sitar. Together, they create a musical experience that feels like being surrounded by the calm and beauty of nature.
Set on a quiet early summer evening, the performance of Raag Shuddha Sarang transports the audience to a place of peace and reflection, filling the air with a sense of calm and beauty. This performance is a celebration of the serene and captivating essence of Indian classical music.
